Licketyspit is a leading early years theatre company that seeks to put children and play at the heart of communities.
Since it was founded in 2004, Licketyspit has been committed to creating participatory, socially engaged work that explores the transformative power of theatre - or play! Our work is rooted in continous, practical artistic research with 3-8 year-olds, through which we have developed a wealth of experience and expertise. We train actors to become specialist actor-pedagogues who deliver LicketyLeap, Porridge & Play and soon, STORYPLAY!
Licketyspit is a national company based in North Edinburgh Arts Centre, in Muirhouse, where we have been Theatre Company in Residence since 2012.
There are 5 strands to our work:
LicketyLeap('the story of Margaret and Margaret') - immersive theatre for 3-5s and their families/teachers, with a focus on disadvantaged communities.
Porridge & Play - outdoor and indoor drama-led play with a group meal (breakfast or lunch!) for 3-8s with their parents/carers and/or early years professionals. Includes Lickety Playcards to keep playing!
Children & Families Network - Ongoing communication with children, families and professionals who have engaged with Licketyspit. Face-to-face, online or in the post! Find us on @Licketytweet and soon on our exciting new webpage!
LicketyKitchen - Continuing professional development training for children and families professionals (CPD) and new work development with our Licketyspit Associate Artists.
Touring Theatre Productions - 7 original plays for 3-12s and adults, with educational and family resources, and collaborative satellite events. Including: Molly Whuppie, Heelie-go-Leerie, Hare and Tortoise Quangle Wangle, Wee Witches Magic Spaghetti and Green Whale
Our latest project incorporates these strands into adaptable programmes of Licketyspit work for schools, designed to tackle the attainment gap. We call these programmes STORYPLAY - follow the link to find out more!
“It is always easy to be carried away by inspirational work with young children. It is necessary to take a long hard look in the cold light of day. Licketyspit has undertaken careful evaluation of the impact of its work, and what emerges is exciting… The work of Licketyspit is of a depth and caliber, which has the kind of quality which is rarely found. It now needs to become part of practice in every group setting working with children 3-7 years. The more parents and practitioners understand and act on the work of Licketyspit, the more young children will be given experiences which will serve them well for the rest of their lives.”
