Hare & Tortoise

Main Image

Tortoise challenges boastful Hare to a race, but who will win this famous contest? Adapted from Aesop’s classic fable, Licketyspit’s Hare & Tortoise is a hilarious, highly energetic and imaginative piece of interactive theatre with songs, poetry, puppetry and play. Join the spectators for this riotous event. Put on your supporters’ hats to shout, “Hare will be there! Yeah, yeah, yeah!” or Go Tortoise go! Don't be slow!” Bake the race cake with the Bun Brothers, survive a night in the spooky wood with a ukulele…

First created in 2001, this adaptation is a fantastic story for all children aged 3 years and up (Nursery to P7) together with their friends and families - including children with additional needs and English as an additional language.

Audience Feedback:

“We still brush our teeth up like the Hare and down like the Tortoise.” (Mum)

“All you need is a washing basket shell and a pair of red tights! Our children were mesmerised.” (Teacher)

“…wit, resourcefulness, nimble imagination, and a heartwarming attention to the kind of teensy wee details that add magic and surprises to the narrative… nuances of cartoon capers, nursery rhymes, slapstick silliness, and opportunities for vociferous audience participation… with audiences the clear winners all the way.” (Herald)

"It was excellent. Interaction with audience, variety, explaining what theatre is. THANK YOU! Great!" (Mum with 5 year old)

"I liked the Bun Brothers baking." (3 year old)

"I liked the bit ‘Wa Wa Wa!’" (5 year old)

"Fantastic, funny, excellent, fun!” (Mum with 8 and 5 year old)

"I loved ALL of it!" (10 year old)

“(We have been) listening the CD from The Hare and the Tortoise EVERYDAY from last Saturday 2-3 times a day, singing songs all day long by wee ones and adults at the same time...That is a big success! Congratulations!” (Mum)

“Very enjoyable indeed. The performance was highly entertaining, riotously funny and beautifully acted. The whole experience was delightful.” (Venue booker)
